I am Headmaster of St Olave’s School in York, an independent school of 360 children aged 8-13. We are the Prep school to St Peter’s, York – one of the oldest schools in Europe, founded in 627AD and with Guy Fawkes as a former pupil. I was also Chairman of the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools (IAPS) in 2010/11.

This blog represents my personal views on things which I’m passionate about – mainly learning, leadership and running.

I will usually be posting a blog once every few weeks and the best way to keep informed is to subscribe by RSS or email.

I have worked in private prep school education all my career since graduating from Lancaster University in 1993. My teaching career started at Terrington Hall Prep School in Yorkshire before moving back to Scotland to teach Geography at Craigclowan School. At this time I started an MBA via distance learning with Leicester University where my passion for leadership really started to develop. I then moved to Salisbury to become Deputy Head at Chafyn Grove School before moving to York in 2005 to become Head (known as The Master) of St Olave’s.

I have been heavily involved in IAPS (Independent Association of Preparatory Schools), a professional organisation representing around 650 of the leading Prep schools around the world. In 2010/11 I was elected Chairman of the organisation giving me the opportunity to take part in conferences and events all over the world, as well as chairing a large and diverse board. The highlight of my chairmanship was organising a two day international conference in Westminster, London and giving the reading during the conference evensong service at Westminster Abbey.

I am a governor at Moorfield School, Ilkley. Board level directorships have included the Independent Schools Inspectorate, the Independent Schools Council and the York Museums Trust. I am also a schools inspector both in the UK and for overseas schools and a former Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts (FRSA).

I have been married to my amazing wife, Lesley, for seventeen years and we have three daughters. We are fortunate to live just a ten minute walk from York’s historic city centre.

Free time involves spending time with my wife and the girls, running, reading, photography and the occasional round of golf.
